Three inside-the-park home runs help North down Cape, 4-2, in softball showdown

By Staff | Mar 6, 2020

Bobbie Dewey Field at North Fort Myers High School is big as softball fields go.

The Red Knights took full advantage of that Thursday night, using three inside-the-park home runs to defeat Cape Coral 4-2.

The Seahawks grabbed a 2-0 lead, but Sydney Morris held Cape right there. Morris struck out 14 batters, and only one of the two runs against her was earned.

“She threw extremely well tonight,” North coach Jeff Miner said. “She was pounding the zone early, getting ahead of the count. When she gets ahead in the count, she does a great job. She gets to locate the change-up, and that makes her very effective.”

A typical high school softball field has fence is 200 feet away from home plate. At North Myers, however, the fences are another 50 feet away.

That gives the Red Knights (5-2) a true home field advantage. Opposing outfielders are unused to having so much room to defend, and all that extra open space gives North batters room to run.

“We get three home runs,” Miner said. “In a smaller park we’d get doubles, possibly a triple. So it plays toward our strengths.”

Sarah Hamilton’s two-run inside-the-parker tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Rosciti legged out a solo inside-the-park home run in the fifth and Kendall Wylie did the same in the sixth inning.

Abby Garcia got Cape Corafl (4-3) on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI single, and a second Seahawks run scored on the play due to a throwing error. With only one out and a runner at third, Morris got out of the inning with no further damage.

“I messed up because we had middles (infielders) back and corners in, and for some reason I had the middles come up. We would have forfeited the one run on anything but a weak fly ball, and guess what? They hit a weak fly ball.”

Abby Gonzalez had three of the Seahawks’ six hits.

“They’re a fun team to play against,” Seahawks co-coach Michelina Mazzella said.

Cape pitcher Avery Mytnik struck out seven in five innings, but was taken out as a precaution when she started limping going up to the plate in the top of the sixth.

Mazzela said that, “She did not want to come out, but that was for her well-being.”

Miner was impressed by what he saw from the Seahawks.

“That’s a good team,” Miner said. “In the past they would have a good pitcher, and be good behind the plate. But they’re strong defensively. The shortstop made a good play, the center fielder made three or four plays, I mean, they can play.”

Oasis 26, Neumann 0 (3 innings): Emily Sharron went 3-for-4 and drove in five runs for the Sharks (5-1), while Emily McWilliams was 2-for-2, scored four times and had two RBI. Pitcher Eva Selfridge held the Celtics to one hit and struck out five over three innings, and also had two RBI.

Mariner 16, Island Coast 0 (3 innings): The opportunistic Tritons (3-4) scored 16 runs on five hits, 12 walks and three Gators (1-3) errors. Jamie Jarvis drove in three runs and scored two, Madison Gervais had three RBI, and Katie Campbell and Kennedy Burham drove in two runs each. Alexis Baker pitched three no-hit innings with five strikeouts for the win.

Baseball

Bishop Verot 18, First Baptist Academy 0 (4 innings): Jack Welch drove in five Bishop Verot runs on a 2-for-2 night, scoring twice himself. Andreas Mantz tripled twice, was 3-for-4 overall and had three RBI. Kevin RisCassi had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored, and Daniel Bitrz had two hits, scored three times and had two RBI. Mason Bevins pitched four shutout innings as the Vikings improved to 2-3.

Island Coast 5, Mariner 2: Jake Mueller doubled, drove in two Gators runs and scored one. Island Coast (4-3) took advantage of five walks issued by Tritons pitchers. Mason Schweizer and Charlie Vershcave had two hits each. On the mound, Bryce Shaffer and Jackson Campbell combined to hold the Tritons to four hits and one earned run while striking out seven. Shaffer went five innings for the win. Mariner’s Alex Freeland went 3-for-4, including a solo home run and a double. The teams face off again Friday at Mariner.

North Fort Myers 4, Cape Coral 0: Luke Mohr went six no-hit innings, striking out nine, and Aiden Denlinger allowed one hit as the Red Knights (2-5) blanked the Seahawks (4-3). Blake Busbee scored three of North’s four runs. Manny Rodriguez doubled, drove in a run and scored a run, and Justin Corbitt went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cape’s Allen Guererero struck out 10 in five innings.
