As is the case in football and volleyball, the state athletic association has gone away from district play as a means to reach the state playoffs.

The FHSAA uses a point system to determine the state field, guaranteeing a playoff berth only to the district tournament champion.

For example, in volleyball this season, Port Charlotte did not play a single district opponent during the regular season but was the district tournament’s top seed based on its points. Playing tough opponents is a major factor in the points system, valued more than defeating district foes which may not be highly rated.

The following is a breakdown of where area teams stand as basketball and soccer enter the home stretch, along with results from this games.

The FHSAA releases updated rankings each Wednesday.

District seedings as of Jan. 15

Only district tournament champion guaranteed playoff berth

District 6A-11: Charlotte and Fort Myers are 1-2, with a big drop-off in points for the other four teams in the district. North Fort Myers is sixth at this point.

District 5A-11: Port Charlotte leads the district in points, with Mariner, Ida Baker and Cape Coral second through fourth. Island Coast is sixth. Based only the current points, this could be a district where only the tournament champ makes the state playoffs.

District 3A-8: Canterbury leads in points. Both Bishop Verot and Oasis will need to make a run to a tournament title to be guaranteed a playoff berth.

Wednesday’s games

Ida Baker 89, Gateway Charter 87 OT: The Bulldogs sent a packed house at Gateway home unhappy with their second overtime win in January. Devyn Bradwell and Andrew Wells scored 22 points each to lead the Bulldogs (8-10). Bryan Aguirre added 26 points. A District 5A-11 game with Cypress Lake awaits on Thursday.

Port Charlotte 73, Cape Coral 47: Alto Tarver scored 15 points and K’dyn Waters 14 for the Seahawks. Cape is 5-9 heading into a Friday game at Mariner.

District 6A-11: North Fort Myers is the sixth seed in one of the state’s most loaded districts. Four of the top 66 teams in Florida are in 6A-11, led by Braden River. Fort Myers, a regular in the state Final Four most of the past decade, is only the fourth seed in the district.

District 5A-11: Mariner is the top seed, with Cape Coral second. Island Coast is the fourth seed and Ida Baker is sixth.

District 3A-7: Bishop Verot and Oasis are 1-2 in the four-team district. Right now probably only one team will emerge from 3A-7, although a big late-season run could change that.

Wednesday’s game

Cardinal Mooney 57, Ida Baker 49: Addison Potts scored 26 points for the 4-15 Vikings, with Lauren Broomhead adding 11 points.

District 5A-11: Cape Coral has a big lead in points. Ranked 41st in the state, Cape just might be able to make the state tournament without winning the district tourney. Ida Baker, North Fort Myers and Island Coast will need to make a big run, and probably have to win the district championship.

District 4A-8: Currently the points leader by a large margin, Mariner is as close to a shoo-in for the state playoffs as any team in the area. The Tritons are nearly 50 points ahead of the next-best team in the region (and district) in LaBelle.

District 3A-8: Right now this looks like a one-bid district, although things can change. Bishop Verot is currently the top seed, with Oasis fourth.

District 5A-11: North Fort Myers has a substantial lead in the race for the top seed in the district. Ida Baker and Cape Coral are second and third, but need a district tourney title or some help to make the playoffs. Island Coast is sixth.

District 4A-8: Lemon Bay has a big points lead over second-place Mariner. The Tritons do have a decent chance at the playoffs either with or without a district tourney crown. Not a sure thing, but a strong finish to the regular season could firm things up.

District 3A-8: At present, this looks like only team is likely to advance to state barring a surprise or three down the stretch. Cardinal Mooney leads the way, with Bishop Verot and Oasis second and third.

Wednesday’s game

Cape Coral 8, Dunbar 0: The Seahawks are 8-6 after rolling past 1-8-1 Dunbar. Cape Coral plays Jan. 21 at Lemon Bay.

Girls basketball

Oasis 57, Donahue Academy 30: Dana Esteve had 13 points and 6 rebounds, Madelyn Thomas 12 points, 7 rebounds and 6 steals, and Aliyah Wilson had 11 rebounds and 8 points for the Sharks (6-7). Oasis was set to play Thursday at Southwest Florida Christian.

Island Coast 42, Bonita Springs 31: The Gators (9-5) got revenge for a home loss early in the season. Island Coast was home Thursday against LaBelle.

Riverdale 51, Ida Baker 36: Riverdale (7-6) got past the Bulldogs (1-12) on Tuesday. Next up for Ida Baker was a home District 5A-11 game with Cypress Lake on Thursday.

Cape Coral 56, South Fort Myers 9: The Seahawks coasted to their 11th win (11-8). Coming up today is a matchup with rival Mariner on Cape Coral’s home court.

Donahue Academy 57, Oasis 48: Oasis (0-14) dropped a road game in Ave Maria to Donahue (5-6). The Sharks were at Southwest Florida Christian on Thursday.

Seacrest Country Day 51, Bishop Verot 35: Andreas Mantz scored 11 points for the Vikings (8-7), who played at Clewiston Thursday.

Cape Coral 74, South Fort Myers 67: The Seahawks (5-8) surprised the Wolfpack (10-6) on South Fort Myers’ home court. Cape Coral was home Wednesday against Port Charlotte.

Boys soccer

Cape Coral 3, South Fort Myers 1: Jacob Jiminez scored twice and had an assist to lead the Seahawks (14-3-3, 4-0) to a District 5A-11 win. Joao Suarez added a goal and an assist, and Diego Alvarez also contributed an assist. Dylan Linares got the win in goal, making six saves.

North Fort Myers 1, North Port 1 (tie): Luke Drivick scored the tying goal for North (2-13-1) on an assist by Garrett Palow. The Red Knights were set for a home game Thursday against Island Coast.

Island Coast 3, Bonita Springs 2: The Gators (2-10-2) earned their second victory of the season.

Oasis 1, SW Florida Christian 1 (tie): The draw left the Sharks 2-9-1 on the year. Oasis was scheduled to play Thursday at Bonita Springs.

Girls soccer

Cape Coral 3, South Fort Myers 0: The Seahawks’ shutout win lifted them to 7-6, 3-1 in District 5A-11. Dunbar visited Cape Coral on Wednesday.

North Fort Myers 5, North Port 0: Michelle Horan had two goals and an assist to lead the Red Knights (8-2-2), while Emilee Hauser and Makenzy Dupree each had a goal and two assists. Samantha Connar added a goal for North. Kayla Flagg posted a shutout in goal. North Fort Myers had a home game scheduled with Island Coast on Thursday.
