Ida Baker boys falls in OT at Sunshine Showdown

By Staff | Dec 27, 2019

The game got away from the Ida Baker Bulldogs at the end.

A see-saw first-round game in the Sunshine Showdown went into overtime before Estero pulled out a 57-50 victory at North Fort Myers High School.

“Back to the drawing board tomorrow,” Ida Baker coach Todd Stowe said. “We’ve got to have a short memory on this one. We really let one get away.”

Estero (3-6) had a chance to win in regulation. A technical was called on Ida Baker (5-3) with 25 seconds to go. Brian McGunn made the first of the two technical foul shots to tie the game at 46, but missed the second and the Wildcats were unable to make a winning bracket in the remaining time.

The game was a bit sloppy, not unexpected with players just coming off a Christmas break.

“There was a lot of rust,” Stowe said. “Kudos to them for remaining aggressive. You really can’t take anything away from what they did.”

Stowe’s Bulldogs posted the first two points of the OT, but were outscored 11-2 the rest of the way.

Johnny Edwards paced Ida Baker with 12 points, including two 3-point baskets. AJ Saso scored 11 for the Bulldogs.

For Estero, McGunn had 15 points, Jason Duclona 14 and Johnathan Matthew 12.

Ida Baker led 20-19 at the half, but Estero grabbed a six-point lead (33-27) the third period. Edwards led a Bulldogs rally with five points to pull within 33-32 with one period to play.

Baker held a narrow lead throughout the fourth quarter before McGunn’s free throw knotted the score.

“We’ve got to come back tomorrow and take care of things tomorrow,” Stowe said.

Ida Baker takes on LaBelle on Friday in the consolation bracket. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

North Fort Myers 67, Island Coast 44: In the opening game of the Black bracket, Jeffrey Kromm scored 29 points to pace the Red Knights (2-7) past the Gators (1-8). North plays at 11 a.m. Friday against the loser of the Moore Haven-East Lee County game, while Island Coast faces the winner of that game at 1 p.m.

Other scores: East Lee County vs. Moore Haven; South Fort Myers 63, Immokalee 60; Gulf Coast 48, LaBelle 35; Barron Collier 73, Gateway Charter 62.

Friday’s schedule: Ida Baker vs. LaBelle, 2:30 p.m.; Immokalee vs. Gateway Charter, 4 p.m.; Estero vs. Gulf Coast, 5:30 p.m.; South Fort Myers vs. Barron Collier, 7 p.m.

Perez scored on a Jason Arias assist to knot the match at 3. Arias earlier had scored to level the score at 2-2 on an assist from Santi Guerrero. Mariner’s first goal came when Marcel Tovar set up Esteban Orjuela.
