Wolfpack dominates Gators 33-10
While South Fort Myers and Island Coast no longer share the same district, both the Gators and the Wolfpack remain rivals based on both schools’ history against one another.
Another chapter of that rivalry was written Friday night at Island Coast when new South Fort Myers’ head coach Anthony Dixon faced off against former Wolfpack defensive coordinator John Schwochow.
The result was a 33-10 Wolfpack beatdown on the Gators as South easily outclassed their opponents on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
Gators quarterback Cory Kurtis was stifled for much of the game, passing for only 38 yards while also throwing two interceptions in what turned out to be a forgettable night for the Gators.
The defense was not much better, giving up six plays of 20 yards or more including three rushing touchdowns of 69, 38 and 42-yards.
Asked how his team was affected by the big plays of South Fort Myers, Gators coach Schwochow placed blame on errors that can be fixed in practice.
“We have to continue to get better at tackling,” Schwochow said. “We just have to keep getting better at the fundamentals of the game and keep improving on them every day in practice.”
One bright spot for Island Coast though is the performance of junior Marlon Gaymon. After scoring twice last week on big plays, Gaymon once again brought a spark to the Gators when he scored on a 60-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
“He’s a difference maker,” Schwochow said. “He makes a difference in what we do.”
Though outclassed for much of the game, the Gators did manage to get on the scoreboard first, getting the ball on the South 25 after a shanked punt. Though the Gators’ had great field position, they were forced to settle for a Curtis field goal.
From that moment on, the game was all South. While the Gators’ did manage to stifle the Wolfpack at times, overall it was a dominating performance bt the Pack.
Island Coast also wasresponsible for some of South’s scoring drives in the game. The Gators’ were called for 13 penalties in the game, twice giving South first downs on either third-anf-long or fourth down.
The Gators have no time to dwell on the loss. They head south next week to take on Naples. The Golden Eagles absorbed a 20-14 loss to Delray American Heritage in their season opener Friday.
