Miracle blank Marauders for 7th straight win
BRADENTON – Omar Bencomo and the bullpen combined to shutout the Bradenton Marauders 1-0 Thursday night for the Fort Myers Miracle.
Bencomo was dominant over seven scoreless frames. Striking out four with no walks, Bencomo (1-1) scattered three hits and retired 14 in a row from the third out of the first inning until a one-out single by Chris Diaz in the sixth. Bencomo threw 78 pitches, 57 for strikes, and recorded eight of 21 outs on the ground.
The Miracle bullpen continued the path Bencomo set. Tyler Jay entered in the eighth and tossed a perfect frame with one strikeout. In the ninth, Todd Van Steensel issued a walk, but struck out a pair and retired Harold Ramirez on a fly ball out to right to secure his team leading 13th save of the season.
Marauders starter Felipe Gonzalez went toe-to-toe with Bencomo through five scoreless frames. In a no-decision, Gonzalez worked around four hits one walk and two strikeouts. Henry Hirsch entered in the sixth and posted a 1-2-3 inning, but was touched up in the seventh.
Mitch Garver singled into left field to start off against Hirsch (2-3). Ryan Walker swung and missed on 1-0 hit-and-run attempt, but Garver slid safely into second with a stolen base. Walker lined out to center for the first out. Marcus Knecht then rolled out to second and Garver advanced to third. On a 1-2 pitch, Logan Wade lined a single up the middle for a two-out RBI. Garver trotted home and the Miracle took a 1-0 lead.
The shutout for the Miracle is the 10th from the pitching staff this season and Fort Myers has now won seven games in a row.
The Miracle (70-55, 32-23) continue the series with Bradenton (64-59, 32-20) Friday night.
