Cape stars back to ‘ourselves’ in 4-1 win

By Staff | Aug 10, 2012

Cape Coral’s Senior all-star softball team played sound softball Thursday night in the final pool play game of the Senior Little League Softball World Series, scoring a 4-1 victory over the Southwest Regional champion Vidalia, La., team

The win earns Cape (2-2) a berth in the fifth-place game at 8 p.m. Friday in Sussex, Del. Their opponent from Pool B was to be determined later Thursday night as teams had to endure a one-hour rain delay. A stormy forecast is expected Friday as well.

“We got back to playing more like ourselves tonight,” said Cape manager Johnny Manetta. “Unfortunately, it was too little too late. We hit the ball better in this World Series than we did last year, but we had to play from behind more often.”

Maddy Peres pitched four scoreless innings, giving up one walk and striking out seven and leaving with a 4-0 lead. Alyssa Langdale tossed the final three innings, surrendering the one run in the seventh inning. Kaitlyn Kelly had two hits and Jessica Nuccio had the game’s only extra-base hit, a run-scoring double in the fourth.

Peres led off the second inning with a single and scored on an error on a ball hit by Taylor Sense. Becca Troast delivered a run with a squeeze bunt attempt that became an unsuccessful fielder’s choice play at the plate. Kelly’s RBI single plated the third run of the inning.

“We had chances to score in the later innings, but did not come up with the key hits,” said Manetta. “Maddy pitched more like her regular self, too.”
