Cape stars headed to consolation round
A 10-0 loss to Puerto Rico Monday night puts the Cape Coral Senior Softball all-stars on a path to the Little League World Series consolation round with an 0-2 record in pool play.
Puerto Rico pitching limited Cape to two hits in Monday’s shutout, handing Maddy Peres the loss after allowing the first five runs. Alyssa Langdale gave up five runs over 1 1/3 innings while Jessica Nuccio stopped the bleeding over the final 2 2/3 innings.
Becca Trost had both of Cape’s base hits Monday.
Nine of the members of Puerto Rico’s roster were on the roster last year when they eliminated Cape in the semifinal round.
Cape takes on the team from Lombardia, Italy, at noon Tuesday as pool play continues.
Cape lost its opening game 7-4 Sunday night to Central Regional champion South Bend, Ind., stranding 11 base runners while surrendering six runs on seven walks and just one hit in a second-inning debacle. Taylor Sense and Langdale contributed a double for the Cape, which led 2-0 heading into the fateful inning.
