Baker falls in OT at Dunbar
Ida Baker lost its preseason game Friday night despite grabbing an early lead, falling 30-24 in overtime at Dunbar, led by Mike Green’s 200-yard rushing performance that included the game-winning 20-yard run in OT.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 17-3 lead thanks to some fantastic special teams play, but faltered in the second half.
Baker turned two Tiger fumbles into 10 points in just 15 seconds early in the first. The touchdown was provided by a muffed kickoff return with a scoop and score by Owen Weeks.
Dunbar answered on its next drive with a 22-yard field goal before the first quarter ended, getting Dunbar back within a score at 10-3.
Baker used another Dunbar special teams flub to score its second touchdown of the game. Following a roughing-the-kicker penalty on a fourth-and-long, Baker used its second chance on the drive to go up 17-3. This courtesy of a pretty pass from senior quarterback Reece Attwood to Cecil Fitch.
Dunbar got its first touchdown thanks to a roughing penalty that extended the drive late in the first half. Johnell Barnes took over and caught three passes on the drive, including a three-yard, one-handed catch with just 13 seconds to go in the half. The extra-point was blocked and the score read 17-9 Bulldogs at half.
The second half saw more of the same from both sides. Sloppy play, turnovers and penalties up and down the field.
Baker found some struggles that seem to recur every season. Taking a lead in the first half only to see it dwindle in the second half was the story in 2010. Green made sure this trend was kept at least for one more game.
Green scored on a dazzling 72-yard run sending the home field crowd into a frenzy, and the score sent him over 100 yards for the night. He followed it with the two-point conversion run. Tying the game at 17-17 in the middle of the third quarter.
Green wasn’t done, following an interception by Attwood, he struck again. This time from 50 yards out to put the Tigers up 24-17 late in the third quarter.
Baker strung together a 16-play drive using the passing attack, rushing attack, and a few big penalties by the Tigers to mount a comeback and tie the game on Alex Febles’ touchdown run with just under four minutes left. The extra-point sent the game to overtime.
Baker’s comeback attempt fell short as Attwood threw an interception.
On Dunbar’s first offensive play of OT, Green scored his third touchdown of the game, putting him over the 200-yard mark.
