First-place Miracle top Yankees 5-4
TAMPA – Third baseman Anderson Hidalgo made a leaping catch to take away a sure game-winning hit as the Fort Myers Miracle held on for a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Yankees Tuesday night.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Tampa’s Walter Ibarra smoked a line drive down the third base line, but Hidalgo robbed him of a hit and sealed the win.
The defensive gem allowed the Miracle (27-19) to take sole possession of first place in the FSL South division for the first time since April 10th. The Mets lost their third straight in Daytona to fall a full game back. Jupiter, which beat Clearwater, is three games behind the Miracle.
Bruce Pugh was credited with his ninth save of the season in his 11th opportunity.
Tampa committed five errors on the night, which resulted in three of the five Miracle runs. The Miracle trailed 3-2 in the fifth inning when the Yankees made three consecutive errors to allow the Miracle to tie the game. Ibarra was charged with the first two errors and a throwing error by first baseman Luke Murton allowed Jhon Goncalves to score from second.
The score remained 3-3 in the seventh inning when Brian Dozier hit a two-out fly ball to left that went off the glove of Neil Medchill – resulting in Dozier going to third. After a walk to Nick Romero, Nate Hanson clubbed a double into the left-center gap to give the Miracle a 5-3 lead.
The Yankees got one of the runs back in the bottom of the seventh with Brad Stillings making his first appearance since coming off the disabled list earlier in the week. Kyle Nigashioka hit one of his three doubles of the night, and eventually scored on a sac-fly by Abraham Almonte, who finished with thee RBI in the game.
Stillings (2-0), who made his first relief appearance of the year, got the win. He allowed just one run in two innings. Yankee reliever Michael Solbach (2-3) took the tough-luck loss, allowing two unearned runs in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Reggie Williams clubbed a two-run homer off Yankee starter Brett Marshall in the first inning, giving the Miracle a 2-0 lead.
Tampa pushed across three runs in the third.
Miracle starter Matt Schuld gave up three earned runs on just five hits in five innings for the no-decision.
The Miracle and Yankees (19-27) close out their current series at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday.
