Mariner runners impress
Doing exactly what they set out to do, the Mariner Tritons bulled their way past Lemon Bay 35-12 Thursday night to close out their spring football season on a positive note.
“That’s what we want to do, establish the running game,” said Tritons coach Chris Siner. “The guys did a good job up front and like I said before we will go as far as our offensive line takes us. I was real proud of the guys and the job they did.”
The running game starts with Tyler Pigott, who carried 15 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns. His scoring runs came from 12 yards out in the second quarter and three yards in the third quarter.
Jaylen Mitchell, who scored on a 55-yard run in the first quarter, and Chaston Carter, who scored on a two-yard run, made contributions.
“Andrew Torres stood out at quarterback,” said Siner. “He did a good job and played both offense and defense. I don’t think he missed a pass, going 6-for-6.”
Torres connected with receiver Tyler Holowell on a five-yard touchdown pass in the opening quarter that put the Tritons in front for good.
New Lemon Bay football coach D.J. Ogilvie remains unsure how to evaluate the Manta Rays.
“We’re going to look at the film tonight and see how we did,” Ogilvie said. “Then I’ll have a better idea of where we stand.”
The Tritons never trailed, leading 14-0 after the first quarter. They built the lead to 21-0 midway through the second quarter before the Manta Rays got untracked.
“It was a balanced effort,” said Siner. “We have to be. It is always better to win the spring game because then everyone is eager to go at it in the summer weight program.”
