Miracle win 3rd in a row

By Staff | Jul 23, 2009

TAMPA – David Bromberg had given up three earned runs in each of his last three starts for the Fort Myers Miracle, but was dominant Wednesday night in a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Yankees at Steinbrenner Field.

Bromberg (8-1) lost a no-hitter with one out in the fifth inning and cruised most of the way, giving up a solo homer to Damon Sublett in the seventh for the only blemish on his outing. The right-hander from Santa Monica went 6 2/3 innings, surrendering three hits, one earned run, three walks and five strikeouts.

Spencer Steedley recorded his sixth save for the Miracle with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. The lefty bounced back from giving up a grand slam in his last outing by allowing one hit, walking one, and striking out one.

The Miracle (13-13) got all the runs they needed in the second inning against Lance Pendleton (10-5), who is 1-1 against them this season. With two out, Allan de San Miguel lined a single into left and Alex Soto crushed a double over right fielder Jack Rye’s head to bring in de San Miguel. The Miracle added one more as Chris Cates reached on an error by shortstop Walter Ibarra as Soto crossed the plate.

Pendleton went six innings with five hits, two runs (one earned), two walks, and seven strikeouts. The Miracle won their third straight game despite 10 strikeouts.

Leadoff hitter Nick Romero (2-for-3) had the only multihit game for the Miracle. Kevin Smith was 2-for-4 for the Yankees.

Chris Parmelee just missed his 15th homer in the sixth inning, settling for his 15th double when the ball hit off the top of the right field wall.

Brad Rulon made his Florida State League debut with a strong three innings of work for Tampa.

The two teams meet again at 7 p.m. Thursday in Tampa.
