Playoff hopes alive for Firecats
The Florida Firecats dropped their sixth straight arenafootball2 contest to the Tennessee Valley Vipers 56-39 Saturday night at Germain Arena. Despite the loss, the Firecats (6-9) remain in the eighth and final spot in the American Conference playoff standings.
The Firecats have the same record as Albany, but own the tiebreaker with one remaining game.
Florida took the early 13-7 lead Saturday thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Justin Midgett. Midgett started his second straight game – and first at home – in place of injured starter Chris Wallace. Midgett finished 28-for-50 for 278 yards and four touchdowns, though he had two interceptions.
Tennessee Valley took a 14-13 lead in the second quarter when Kevin Eakin connected with Larry Sharp. The tandem hooked up for four touchdowns. The Vipers led throughout the second half.
Firecats defensive back James McCoy provided a spark on defense and special teams finishing the night with seven tackles and a 54-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
The Firecats host the Kentucky Hoseman in the final regular season game Saturday at Germain Arena.
