Dupay pleads guilty to lesser charges

By Staff | Jun 24, 2009

FORT MYERS (AP) – Former Mariner High School and University of Florida basketball star Teddy Dupay has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from an alleged attack on a woman at a Utah ski lodge in 2008.

Dupay, 29, pleaded guilty Monday to aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, and two misdemeanors.

Before changing his plea, Dupay had faced charges of rape, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault charges. Each would have carried a sentence of up to life in prison.

Dupay agreed to a plea agreement before his jury trial was set to begin Wednesday.

A woman Dupay had been dating told authorities that he attacked her at the Stein Eriksen Lodge near Salt Lake City in June 2008. The accuser told prosecutors Dupay hit and kicked her about 150 times. Investigators said she had bruises, scratches and a swollen left eye. Prosecutors have said they offered Dupay a plea bargain because the accuser lacks credibility, and she admitted trying to contact him several times after the attack and sent him text messages.

Dupay also agreed to plead guilty to threat against life and intoxication, both misdemeanors.

He faces up to five years in prison at his sentencing set for Aug. 24.

Dupay, who graduated from Mariner High School, is Florida’s all-time high school basketball scoring leader. He started at guard for the Florida Gators when they lost to Michigan State in the 2000 NCAA championship game.
