Three runs not enough for Miracle

By Staff | Jun 23, 2009

After a three-run second inning, highlighted by Danny Berg’s two-run triple that put Fort Myers on top, the Jupiter Hammerheads cobbled together four runs over the last three innings to win the series opener 4-3 over the Miracle Monday night at Hammond Stadium.

In the seventh, Osvaldo Martinez lined an RBI single to make it 3-1. In the eighth, an RBI single by Brandon Tripp and a sac-fly from Matt Dominguez tied the game. Finally, in the ninth, Greg Burns sliced a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield with two outs for what proved to be the game-winner.

Blair Erickson (0-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing one earned run on two hits during 1 2/3 innings of relief. Santos Arias surrendered three earned runs on five hits in two innings after Steve Hirschfeld started and scattered six hits through 5 1/3, allowing no runs, walking two, and fanning three.

Danny Berg and Jair Fernandez each went 2-for-4 in a losing effort.

The Hammerheads (34-31) are 6-4 against the Miracle (41-26), making them the only division rival to have a winning record against the first-half South Division champs.

The teams meet again today at 12:05 p.m.
