Zunino drafted by A’s

By Staff | Jun 11, 2009

From Stephen Strasburg to Seth Schwindenhammer, the names began to accumulate during the first two days of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft.

In the 29th round Wednesday, with the 873rd pick, the Oakland Athletics selected Mariner High graduate Michael Zunino.

Zunino, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound catcher, was a standout player for the Tritons the past four years and continued to develop his skills, becoming a highly-rated high school catcher.

It’s led to two unique opportunities – either play college baseball at the University of Florida or sign with the Athletics and begin playing Minor League baseball.

The son of Greg and Paola Zunino, played Little League for six years at Cape Coral National at Jason Verdow Park, along with numerous travel teams.

At Mariner, Zunino led the Tritons to back-to-back District 5A-15 titles and slugged a combined 21 home runs during his junior and senior seasons.

The draft continues Thursday.
