Miracle suffer another shutout

By Staff | Jun 3, 2009

VIERA – The Brevard County Manatees gave their second straight strong pitching performance and recorded their second straight shutout of the Fort Myers Miracle 5-0 Tuesday night.

The two division leaders in the Florida State League split a four-game series, three games by shutout, at Space Coast Stadium.

Brevard’s Jeremy Jeffress (1-0) had his best outing with a one-hitter in seven innings, no walks, and seven strikeouts.

Carlos Gutierrez (2-3) suffered his third loss for the Miracle with seven hits over five innings, two earned runs, one walk, and one strikeout.

The Miracle host Clearwater Wednesday night at Hammond Stadium.

Miracle outfielder Ben Revere, 21, has been named Minnesota Twins Minor League Player of the Week (May 15-21) and Carlos Gutierrez, 22, the Twins Minor League Pitcher of the Month (April).

Revere went 11-for-22 with three stolen bases in six games for the Miracle. The first-round draft pick in 2007 leads the Florida State League in hitting with a .344 batting average, garnering 23 RBI and 21 stolen bases.

Working exclusively as a reliever last year for the Miracle, Gutierrez is thriving as a starter. He compiled a 0.78 ERA in four starts in April, while opponents could only muster a .135 batting average against him in 23 innings.

Gutierrez, a candidate to start for the South Division in the Florida State League All-Star Game, leads the league in ERA (1.09) and was going for his third victory (2-2) Tuesday at Brevard County.

The Miracle also welcome back pitcher Glen Perkins Thursday night, when he makes a rehab start. The left-hander is on the disabled list due to an inflamed nerve in his elbow.
