If the Cape Blackhawks are going to the state rugby playoffs it will be as a wild-card team.

The Blackhawks met their match Saturday, falling to visiting Naples 27-12 in a game that ultimately decided the Southwest Division title.

The Blackhawks, in their second season, had been dominant in recent weeks but suffered both losses to the stronger Naples squad.

“They were strong and physically in better shape than we were,” Blackhawks coach Phil Luby said.

Brian Zeller converted one try for Cape and Ryan Pigott made a conversion.

Naples (7-0) clinched a berth in the state playoffs. Cape (6-2) must wait until the wild-card team is announced Monday night.

n Miami Coral Reef 6, North Fort Myers 4: The Red Knights are enjoying one of their best seasons, which has included two huge wins over District 5A-15 rival Fort Myers. Twice, though, the Red Knights have stumbled in the next game after beating the Green Wave.

It happened again Saturday, falling to Miami Coral Reef in a nondistrict game at Florida Gulf Coast University.

Junior Jackie Owen (14-2) allowed one earned run but the Red Knights committed six errors and squandered a 3-0 lead.

“That was uncharacteristic of us,” North coach Jeff Miner said. “I hope we got that out of our system.”

Owen helped the offense with an RBI double. Freshman Katrissa Rowell added a double and two RBI, and senior Mariah Fernandez had two singles and two stolen bases.

The Red Knights defeated Fort Myers 2-1 Thursday, improving to 6-1 in District 5A-15 play. They also defeated the Green Wave 1-0 earlier this season and then dropped a 2-1 contest at Mariner.

They host East Lee County Tuesday at Bobbie Dewey Field.
