Firecats trade for lineman

By Staff | Mar 25, 2009

The Florida Firecats traded for offensive lineman Greg Hammond Tuesday, sending receiver Lamar Hughes to Peoria in exchange for Hammond.

Hughes is the second player the Firecats have sent to Peoria in as many weeks. Quarterback Todd Spitzer was traded to the Pirates for future considerations.

“Greg is a natural center and we are trying to add some depth at that position,” said Firecats coach Kevin Bouis.

The move gives the Firecats four offensive linemen on the roster.

Hammond started two games for the Arkansas Twisters in 2008. Prior to that he played for an indoor football team based in Bethlehem, Pa. The 6-foot-2, 338-pound lineman is a native of Melbourne and played collegiately at Arizona Western Junior College and Virginia Union University.

The Firecats travel to Albany, Ga., for a rematch Saturday with division rival South Georgia. The Firecats return to Germain Arena on April 18 to face the Kentucky Horsemen.
