Baseball

Island Coast 6, East Lee 1: Island Coast coach Clint Montgomery feels his first-year varsity team has let a few games slip away this season. They made sure that didn’t happen Thursday night thanks to strong pitching by sophomore Jordan Moody and sophomore closer Kyle Harding.

Moody went six innings in the Gators’ win over East Lee County. The right-hander allowed only two hits and one unearned run.

Harding came on in his usual relief role in the seventh and finished off the Jaguars, striking out two.

The Gators (5-7) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Freshman Randy Petito sparked the big inning with a leadoff single and stolen base. Taylor Renegar and Nelson Candelario had RBI doubles, and Marco LoSauro added an RBI single.

After three quiet innings, the Gators added runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Josh Guffey delivered an RBI double in the sixth.

“I didn’t think four runs would be enough,” Montgomery said. “We kind of sat there for a few innings and they were just a hit away. We got that run in the fifth and tacked on another in the sixth, and that’s what you have to do.”

The Gators travel to Cape Coral Friday for the second meeting of the season between the schools. The Gators won 4-1 early in the season at the Early Bird Tournament.
