Male Athlete of the Week
Cape Coral High sophomore Prince Holloway has yet to reach the midway point of his high school career. The number of big plays he’s provided on the football field and his impact on the track and field team tend to suggest otherwise.
“Even though he’s just a sophomore, he performs at a higher level,” said Larry Gary, the Seahawks’ track coach and an assistant football coach.
The Daily Breeze Male Athlete of the Week shined last Friday, along with several Seahawk sprinters, at the 48th annual Fort Myers Optimist Edison Relays.
Holloway prevailed in a competitive 200-meter dash with a time of 22.59 seconds. He placed just ahead of Fort Myers’ Jamain Cole (22.79) and Gateway Charter’s Askia Miller (22.99).
Holloway was quick to burst onto the scene as a freshman receiver. He hauled in six touchdown catches that season as the Seahawks reached the Class 5A Regional Finals, including a 99-yarder, and continued to be the team’s go-to receiver as a sophomore.
In football, Holloway often uses his speed to separate from defensive backs. The circumstances are different in track when he’s challenged by many of the fastest runners in the area.
Holloway said he wasn’t sure what to expect going into Friday’s 200-meter race.
“I’ve been doing it since middle school and have been working on it, but I didn’t think I could actually place with the guys that were running,” he said. “It was tight the whole way.”
Along with his individual performance, Holloway helped the Seahawks win the 4×100 relay. He ran with Jaylen Watkins, Spencer Boyd and Jeremy Davis. The Seahawks advanced to state last year in the 4×100 and 4×400 events. The expectations are high given their returning runners.
“We plan on going back and actually placing this time,” he said.
Honorable mentions:
Austin Luby, Cape Blackhawks rugby: Luby converted two trys in the Blackhawks’ 49-12 win over the Pinellas Athletic Club. He has scored in all eight games this year.
Walter Cleary, sophomore, Mariner baseball: Cleary cracked a pair of two-run homers in the Tritons’ wins over North Fort Myers and Cape Coral last week.
