Prep Report: Melendez shuts out Cape
Ivan Melendez’s no-hit bid was broken up with two outs in the top of the sixth inning by Cape Coral’s Cain Spangler, but the North Fort Myers Red Knights managed to shut out the Seahawks 6-0 Tuesday at North.
Melendez worked seven innings, allowing two hits and struck out nine.
Mike Becker sparked the offense with a two-run triple in the first inning. Becker went 3-for-3 and scored twice.
North (2-3) hosts Cypress Lake Thursday. Cape Coral (0-4) visits Baker.

Ida Baker 15, East Lee County 0: Freshman Justin Pinto blasted his third home run of the season, leading Ida Baker to a five-inning victory over East Lee County.
Pinto’s three-run shot came in the Bulldogs’ five-run third inning. He went 2-for-3 and finished with four RBI.
The Bulldogs pounded out 12 hits. Brian Rogowski (2-for-4) had an RBI triple, Miles Rubinski added an RBI double in the third, and Ryan Hudson went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Richard Saracione, Matt Mattia and Robert Serrano combined for the no-hitter.
The Bulldogs (3-2) host Cape Coral Friday.

Seacrest Country Day 4, Island Coast 3: A two-out throwing error led to three unearned runs in the first inning as Seacrest Country Day went on to a victory at Island Coast.
Marco Losauro connected for a two-run double in the third for the Gators and also absorbed the loss on the mound.

Mariner 6, Ida Baker 1: After opening the season with a tight loss to Cypress Lake, the Mariner Tritons have rebounded with back-to-back wins, including Tuesday against crosstown rival Ida Baker.
The host Tritons took all five singles matches. Senior Aaron Smith beat Baker’s Caleb Davis 6-4, 6-3. Seniors Tim Connelly and Nathaniel Gunnin, junior Danville Bent and sophomore Steven Allen each added straight-set victories.
Baker’s tandem of Kevin Keefe and Nick Boye recorded a win at second doubles.
The Tritons (2-1) play at Cape Coral Thursday. Baker visits Island Coast Thursday.

North Fort Myers 6, Island Coast 1: Island Coast’s Kenzi Polotto won at first singles, but the rest of the matches belonged to North Fort Myers.
Polotto knocked off North senior Ellen McHugh 6-1, 6-3.
The Red Knights got singles wins from Abbey Gunderson, Karissa Holden, Tonya Moore and Roodelyne Forvil.

Ida Baker 5, Mariner 2: The return of senior Amanda Teets helped visiting Ida Baker top crosstown rival Mariner.
Teets missed the Bulldogs’ season-opening loss to Cape Coral, but came back strong Tuesday with a straight-set victory over Mariner’s Sydney Bell at No. 1 singles.
Junior Kjerstine Payne cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles and teamed with Teets for a win at No. 1 doubles.
Mariner’s Adrienne Wadsworth won at both singles and doubles.
Baker (1-1) plays away Friday at Island Coast.

Bishop Verot 7, Estero 0: The young but talented Vikings cruised to their second straight-set sweep of the season, this time against host Estero.
Freshman Linda Kornienko dropped just one game in her match at first singles. Sophomore Mariel Rickert and freshmen Nia-Marie Eddy and Kayla Cheslosky also won in straight sets.
It was the first District 2A-11 match for the Vikings (2-0), who host Gateway Charter Thursday.

North Fort Myers 7, Cape Coral 1: Junior Jackie Owen shut down Cape Coral for the second time in six days, and host North improved to 7-0.
The Red Knights honored former athletic director Bobbie Dewey, who passed away 11 years ago from breast cancer.
Allie Kennedy led the Red Knights, going 3-for-3 with a single, double and triple. Micheala Schlotter went 2-for-2 and scored twice.
Cassie Maselter, Tara Higgins and Shannon McBride had the three singles for the Seahawks (1-3).
North hosts Cypress Lake Thursday. Cape plays at Ida Baker Friday.

Bishop Verot 14, Dunbar 0: Allie Mitchell, Talia Baracco and Kelsey McCurdy combined to pitch a perfect game as the Vikings dominated Dunbar.
Hailey Baracco had a double, contributing to a consistent offensive attack for the Vikings (4-2).
The Vikings face a more difficult task Wednesday as they travel to Naples.
Ida Baker 11, East Lee County 0: Sierra Myers and Tara Sozio combined for a one-hitter over five innings, and Baker won at East Lee County.
Myers worked the first three innings and Sozio pitched the last two. The Bulldogs had 15 hits.
