Seahawks roll to 3-0 win
The Cape Coral High soccer team is making history. The specifics, though, are a little vague.
What’s clear is the Seahawks’ 3-0 victory over Hollywood Hills in a Region 5A-4 quarterfinal game Thursday night is their first regional victory in at least 18 years.
“I’m not sure if it’s ever happened before,” Seahawks coach Aldo Nardiello said. “If it did, it was back in the 1980s.”
It’s hard to imagine a more dominating performance than the one the Seahawks put forth Thursday night at Dave Warkentin Stadium.
Mario Montes, Zach Sheffield and Shane Pacheco each scored first-half goals and the Seahawks (13-7-4) took the fight to the Spartans (13-9-2), outshooting them 23-7.
The defense was equally impressive in front of freshman goalkeeper Santi Villamil. Nick Gillogly, Alex Russell, Andrew Torres and Andrew Gonzalez played strong defensive games, contributing to the shutout.
“You’re always nervous facing an unknown team,” Nardiello said. “You have to figure things out real quick. I think that’s where the senior leadership comes into play.”
The Seahawks have won seven straight games. They entered last week’s District 5A-15 Tournament as the No. 5 seed, but reeled off three straight wins over Ida Baker, Fort Myers and Mariner to win that title.
Though they had nearly a week off before the regional quarterfinals, the Seahawks continued their hot play.
They had the majority of first-half chances against Hollywood Hills goalkeeper Marlon Mendez. Seniors Guillermo Duque and Kenny Segura led a strong counterattack for the Seahawks.
With 29 minutes left in the half, Duque sent a pass ahead to Montes. He went around two defenders, but his shot was saved by Mendez.
The tandem delivered, though, with 17 minutes remaining. Duque assisted Montes in the center of the 18-yard box, and Montes blasted a shot past Mendez for a 1-0 lead.
The Seahawks continued to control possession the rest of the half. They stretched the lead to 2-0 with 11 minutes left when Fabian Fajardo’s free kick bounced off the goalkeeper and Sheffield deposited the rebound.
On the final goal, Paolo Acosta sent a pass ahead to Pacheco on the right flank. Pacheco’s blast went straight for the left side of the goal as Mendez watched it sail into the net.
The Spartans’ best chance at a rally came early in the second half. Three minutes in, Carlos Padilla struck a drive over Villamil from 25 yards, but it hit the crossbar.
Villamil made his best save with 24 minutes left in the half, diving to stop a shot off the foot of Phillipe Renard.
The Seahawks weren’t threatened much over the final 20 minutes of play.
They advance to the regional semifinals and play at Oakland Park Northeast Tuesday night.
