Blades win 4th straight, 4-3

By Staff | Feb 5, 2009

The Florida Everblades extended their current winning streak to four games Wednesday night by defeating the South Carolina Stingrays 4-3 at Germain Arena.

Unlike the night before, the Everblades (33-9-2) carried the lead into the final period and had to hold on against the Stingrays.

“We are more of a hard-nose, smash-mouth team right now,” said Everblades coach Malcolm Cameron. “We lost some skill players last night like Ryan Lang and then tonight with Steve McJannet, so we are more of a north/south smash-mouth team. That’s how we had to play tonight to be successful.”

In almost a mirror image of the previous night, the squads skated into the first intermission tied 1-1 with goals by Florida’s Kevin Baker and Carolina’s Maxime Lacroix.

The second period belonged to the Blades, particularly the line of Kevin Baker, Earnie Hartlieb and Mathieu Roy, who totaled seven points.

Roy scored the first of two goals in the period, beating Stingrays netminder Jonathan Boulin (27 saves).

Andrew Fournier gave the Blades a comfortable two-goal lead heading into the final period.

Hartlieb, Baker and Roy hooked up on a power play to put Florida up 4-1 with Baker scoring the eventual game-winning goal.

The Stingrays capitalized twice on a 5-on-3 advantage, but the Blades’ defense stiffened.

The action shifts to South Carolina as the Blades journey there Friday and Saturday nights.
