Prep Report: Baker takes 4th in LCAC wrestling
Riverdale wrestlers claimed championships in six weight classes to win the Lee County Athletic Conference wrestling championship Saturday at Cape Coral High.
The Raider matmen garnered 294.5 team points to finish ahead of runner-up South Fort Myers (235) and Fort Myers (178).
Ida Baker had one wrestler reach the championship match and four others placed in the top four to collect 129 points, good enough for fourth place among the 13 teams. Cape Coral (112) was fifth, Mariner (90.5) was sixth and North Fort Myers (66) placed eighth. Island Coast, in its first varsity season, placed 10th ahead of three other schools.
Baker’s Scotty Matos took second in the 125-pound class, losing an 11-8 decision to Estero’s Kevin Opalinsky in the championship match.
Bulldogs Bobby Nuccio (119), Justin Nielsen (135) and Darryl Gary (140) all took third place in their weight classes while Jacob York placed fourth in the 171-pound class.
Cape’s Bessik Beriashvili (145, 3rd), Shawn Hart, 215, 3rd), Jesse Whitt (152, 4th) and Rocky Mullins (189, 4th) placed in the top four.
Calvin Luzerraga was the only Mariner wrestler to reach the championship match, losing to Riverdale’s Matt Wright by pin in the 130-pound final. Bret Hurt (125, 3rd), Max Phillips (119, 4th) and Luke Yurich (160, 4th) also placed for the Tritons.
For Island Coast, Obed Alago (112) and Cody Colle (130) placed fourth in their respective classes.
Baker, Cape, Mariner and North wrestlers will make final preparations this week for the District 2A-11 tournament Saturday at Charlotte High School. First-round matches commence at 10 a.m. with the championship finals set for 7 p.m.
Basketball
Fort Myers at Bishop Verot: A limited number of tickets to Bishop Verot’s final regular-season home game Saturday night with Fort Myers go on sale Tuesday at both schools.
Only 2,400 tickets are available for the game, which is expected to be sold out by Thursday.
