Prep report: Cape Coral, Ida Baker win games in shootout

All in all, it was a strong showing by area teams in the Cape Shootout Saturday at “The Nest.” Ida Baker defeated Palm Beach Wellington 62-60, Bishop Verot topped Gainesville Williston 63-61 in overtime and host Cape beat Sarasota 54-49 in boys’ basketball action.

In the most thrilling game, Verot knocked off Williston, the third-ranked team in Class 3A, on a last second shot by Jesse Kane. Etienne Effenberg scored 19 points to lead the Vikings (10-6).

Baker led by as many as 14 in the third quarter against Wellington, but had to withstand a late run. Rob Serrano and Xavier Battle made clutch free throws to help the Bulldogs secure the win. The Bulldogs (11-6) also got strong performances from Gabe Rodriguez (17 points), John Skinner (16 points) and Zach Campbell (10 points).

Baker hosts Mariner Friday night. Cape also returns to action Friday at Fort Myers.

n Mariner 89, East Lee County 59: The Tritons knocked down six three-pointers, leading to an easy victory at East Lee County. Four Triton players hit double figures and 10 different players scored. Ricardo Barsesa had 19, Kameron Beach 11 and Clint Johnson talliued 14 points and 10 rebounds.
