Baker girls win cancer benefit
Wearing pink jerseys with white numbers, it was difficult, at times, to tell one Ida Baker player from another at Tuesday night’s soccer match against Lehigh.
The Bulldogs also used mass substitutions, rotating in large groups of players every few minutes.
That total team approach, though, turned out to be symbolic of the night’s main objective. The girls and the Bulldogs community teamed up to raise money for breast cancer research.
The Bulldogs also picked up a dominating 7-1 victory over Lehigh in their first Breast Cancer Awareness benefit game.
“Most of the people on our team know someone who has some type of cancer,” said junior Christine Giles.
“We just decided to give back to the community for all they’ve done for us,” freshman Payton Van Horn said.
The Bulldogs dedicated the game to one of their classmates who recently was diagnosed with breast cancer.
All the gate proceeds, along with money from concessions, went to the cancer foundation. Prizes, gift baskets and T-shirts were given out to spectators.
The Baker boys’ team also took part in the event, wearing pink ankle bands and pink armbands during their match with the Lightning, which followed the girls’ match.
“We tried to get as many fans out as possible,” Baker coach Dave Trepkowski said. “It’s tough with other sports going on, but it was a decent turnout for the first time.”
Though the game was secondary, the Bulldogs still wanted to take care of business in their final District 5A-12 match.
The Bulldogs (13-3-3) overwhelmed the Lightning, regardless of which combination of players was on the field.
Giles scored four goals, giving her 21 on the season, and had one assist. Van Horn, Alli Hare and Lacey Sovern also found the net for the Bulldogs, who outshot the Lightning 15-0 in the first half.
They scored their first goal when senior Isa Miranda intercepted a goal kick and slid a pass to Giles, who buried the shot.
Giles struck again with 13 minutes left in the half. She was left all alone at the top of the 18-yard box, took her time and blasted a shot past goalkeeper Audra Bianco, who tallied 17 saves.
Sovern scored the final goal of the half, on an assist from Brittney Herrera, extending the lead to 3-0.
Though the majority of the game was played in the Bulldogs’ offensive end, the Lightning got one goal early in the second half.
An illegal use of the feet penalty set up a free kick and Yesenia Marquez scored for the Lightning, making it 3-1.
The Bulldogs regained control after that. With around 22 minutes left, Hare jumped up into the offensive attack from her defensive spot and scored from about 25 yards. Giles scored each of the next two goals for the Bulldogs, and Van Horn converted with less than two minutes to play.
The Bulldogs are off until Jan. 16 when they host an LCAC crossover match.
