It’s amazing what a difference a week can make for the Florida Everblades.

Last weekend the Everblades looked uninspired and got outworked in losing back-to-back games at Germain Arena to the South Carolina Stingrays. The Blades were outscored 10-3 in those games.

The Blades resembled a different this weekend when they defeated the Mississippi Seawolves 5-2 on Friday and Saturday nights.

Saturday’s win extended the Everblades winning streak to four games. They played all four games in a five-day span.

“I think the biggest thing for us is that, when you get tired, the game style changes,” said coach Malcolm Cameron. “We have to realize that in the third and fourth games of the week your game style changes and you have grind-it-out, plumber-style of games.”

“In the second period, we got away from that grind-it-out style and (the Seawolves) scored two goals on us to get back into the game. In the third period the guys went back to that style and our defense got stingy.”

Stingy would be a massive understatement.

The Everblades defense was dominant in the third periods of both games against the Seawolves, allowing a paltry six shots combined.

At the same time, their offense was firing on all cylinders as they pelted Seawolves goaltender Ryan Munce with 15 shots in the final period of play Saturday night.

Overall it was sort of the early Christmas gift that Blades’ fans were hoping for from their division-leading team. The Blades head back to the road after the Christmas break.

“For the moment, I am content with how the team has played,” said Cameron, “but you are never fully satisfied until you are the last team standing at the end of the year. Guys are leaning on each other to be more consistent and it’s good that it comes from the locker room rather than from the coach.”
