SPECIAL TO THE BREEZE North Fort Myers senior Mariah Fernandez gets ready defensively during a softball game while a member of the Lee County Rage travel team. On Sunday, Fernandez signed a softball scholarship with Florida Gulf Coast University.

In recent years, several members of the North Fort Myers Red Knights have continued playing softball at the next level. Senior Mariah Fernandez added her name to the list Sunday, signing a softball scholarship with Florida Gulf Coast University.

“We’ve probably sent about 13 off to colleges in the past six or seven years,” North coach Jeff Miner said, “but Mariah is our first player to sign a Division I scholarship.”

Fernandez, who resides in Cape Coral, signed her papers Sunday during a ceremony at the North softball field. She decided on FGCU over such schools as Warner Southern, Manatee Community College and Daytona State College.

Fernandez has showcased her talent in many ways for the Red Knights.

The left-hander is an outstanding defensive player at first base and outfield, and has compiled a career batting average of .369 and .605 slugging percentage.

Fernandez has also played several other sports such as soccer and volleyball, and maintains 4.34 GPA.
