Coaches announce football all-district squad

By Staff | Nov 14, 2008

Three Cape Coral High football players and one Mariner player are among those chosen by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association for its annual All-District 16 first team.

District 5A-12 champion Fort Myers is represented by four players on the first team, the most of any area school.

The Seahawks (7-3), who are preparing for next Friday’s regional quarterfinal playoff game at Venice, received strong recognition on the offensive line. Senior center Tony Waller (6-foot-1, 272 pounds) and senior guard Nate Sprosty (6-5, 283) snagged two of the spots on the first team.

The other Seahawk selected to the first team is two-way standout Jaylen Watkins, a 6-1 junior. He has made an impact at several different positions this season, including receiver, quarterback and kick returner, but was selected as a free safety.

Mariner senior Renato Proia was selected as the first-team punter.

Four Green Wave seniors were selected to the squad — tight end John Kohlhauff, guard Dom Basil, defensive tackle Emory Mandala and linebacker Greg Wade.

South Fort Myers senior cornerback Broderick Jenkins was named Player of the Year, and Dunbar coach Phil Vogt grabbed Coach of the Year honors.

Undefeated Dunbar (9-0) has two players on the first team.
