Blades on four-game win streak
It’s all starting to come together for the Florida Everblades.
The Blades are on a four-game winning streakk after putting together their best overall performance of the season in a 4-0 victory over the division rival Gwinnett Gladiators Saturday night at Germain Arena.
“I thought we played our best thirdperiod of the year (Saturday night),” said Everblades coach Malcolm Cameron. “That’s the way I want us to play all season long for 60 minutes.”
In past games, Florida (6-2-1) had letdowns in the third period. It’s been a point of contention for Cameron who regularly preaches to his players that to win consistently you must play a “full 60 minutes of hockey.”
“Guys needed to see that it wouldn’t take away from their offense by playing what we like to call that greasy-gritty style,” he continued. “When you have skill and you can get your guys to play that way you’re going to get an awful lot of scoring chances and draw a lot of penalties. I was very pleased with everybody. Everybody had an outstanding effort.”
There were plenty of reasons for Cameron to be so pleased.
All seven of the goals scored in two victories over the Gladiators were scored by different players. The scoring included Colin Nicholson’s shorthanded goal Saturday night.
In all, 12 different Everblades had at least one point in the series. Goaltender Anton Khudobin stopped 75 of the 76 shots he faced in the two games.
“Since the start of the year we knew we had a lot of skill,” said Nicholson, “but you can’t win games one on one. It was just a matter of guys working together towards the same system. We had to learn to use each other and once we (started doing that) it really showed.”
One of those who is benefitting most is longtime Everblade Earnie Hartlieb. He had an assist in each game and is averaging better than a point per game this season, playing on a line that includes Kevin Baker and Yannick Tifu.
“It’s fun to play with good hockey players like Baker and Tifu,” said an excited Hartlieb. “All of our lines, I love to play with all of those guys, because they’re talented and know how to move the puck.”
For now, that talent is evident.
The Blades look the make it five straight on Friday night when they host the Augusta Lynx at Germain Arena.
