Prep Report: Seahawk girls tie in opener

Conditioning became a factor late in the Cape Coral Seahawks’ soccer season opening game Thursday night at Dave Warkentin Field.

Nina Antonacci scored both of Cape’s goals in the first half, but had to settle for a 2-2 tie when Gulf Coast came back in the second half. The Sharks got the tying goal with 1:30 left in the game.

“We played a strong first half and a weak second half,” said Seahawks coach Dan Gross. “We definitely got tired.”

Seahawks goalkeeper Shelby Rowe turned away 12 shots on goal.

Cape (0-0-1) plays at North Fort Myers on Tuesday.

Fort Myers 2, Ida Baker 2 (tie): Christine Giles scored the game-tying goal with four minutes remaining in Ida Baker’s district match against Fort Myers.

Autumn Yesch got Baker’s first goal to break the scoring ice. The Green Wave tied the game later and took a 2-1 lead before Giles lofted a shot over the keeper’s head from 35 yards to force the tie.

Goalkeepers Natalia Ortiz and Libby Schuls made six saves each.

The Bulldogs (1-0-1) travel to Barron Collier next Wednesday.

North Fort Myers 8, East Lee County 0: Mariah Fernandez connected for four goals with Brianna Hawkins contributing two goals and two assists to lead North Fort Myers past East Lee County.

Courtney Allen and Nicole Pavese also tallied goals, while Katie Crosby assisted on one goal and Rachel Perkins had two assists.

Brianna Abatisti enjoyed a light night, making two saves in goal to post the shutout.

The Red Knights (2-1) host Cape Coral next Wednesday.

Bishop Verot 2, Evangelical Christian 1: Kady Otzko rattled home two goals in the second half to bring Bishop Verot back from a one-goal deficit and defeat Evangelical Christian.

Megan Barton and Lauren Cento were credited with assists on the Verot goals. Goalkeeper Amber Law, who faced only four shots, made two saved in the win.

The Vikings (2-0) host Gulf Coast Monday.

Swimming

Region 3A-2: Sarasota Riverview captured the regional overall girls’ team title while Palm Harbor claimed the boys’ trophy Thursday at the Florida Gulf Coast University pool. Countryside placed second in both the boys’ and girls’ meets.

Cape Coral High will send Carlos Alvarez to the Class 3A State Meet next Thursday at UCF. Alvarez placed second in diving to earn the trip to Orlando.

Cape’s Tyler Thresher, Jacob Perkins, Nick Keating and Antonio Alvarez teamed up to break the school record in the 200 free relay (1:36.38) to place eighth. They’ll have to wait until Sunday to find out if they also earned an at-large invite to the state meet.

The girls’ 200 free relay and 400 relay teams placed sixth and eighth, respectively, and also hope for an at-large berth. Likewise for Christina Todd, who placed sixth in the 100 butterfly, and Jeanette Conrad, who placed sixth in diving.

Greg Bowser of North Fort Myers took third in the 500 freestyle and must wait for word of an at-large invite.
