FGCU men top Ave Maria

Florida Gulf Coast University’s men’s basketball team knocked off the Ave Maria Gyrenes 89-58 in an preseason warmup game Wednesday night at Alico Arena.

Delvin Franklin led the Eagles in scoring with 16 points, and freshman point guard Reggie Chambers made an impressive debut, scoring 13 points to go along with six assists and two steals.

E.J. Ciaccio led the Gyrenes with 14 points and Tim Snyder chipped in a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds with four blocks.

After Ave Maria took an early 5-2 lead, the Eagles answered with an 8-0 run capped by steal and layup by Chambers. A couple of minutes later, the Eagles opened the gap with a 12-0 run, including two three-pointers by junior Ben Vega.

With 8:36 to play in the first half and the Eagles leading 31-14, junior Derrick O’Neill took over. In a span of just under 40 seconds, O’Neill recorded a dunk, a steal, an assist, and a block.

The Gyrenes went on a 13-0 run to pull within six points with 2:15 to play before the half. The Eagles answered with a 6-0 run to lead at the half 43-31.

The Eagles dominated the second half, outscoring the Gyrenes 28-7 over the first 10 minutes. The Eagles never looked back, outscoring Ave Maria 46-27 in the second half.

Ave Maria turned the ball over 32 times in the game, 19 of which were steals by the Eagles.

The Eagles open the regular season against the defending national champion Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kan., at 9 p.m. on Nov. 18.
