FGCU wins 11th straight volleyball match
DeLAND — The FGCU Eagles won their 11th straight volleyball match Tuesday night with a 25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 25-15 win at Stetson .
The Eagles (18-6, 16-1 Atlantic Sun) went on a 7-2 run in the opening set to take a 16-11 lead. FGCU got a pair of kills from Roberta Santos and two from Ana Kokanovic. They built an eight-point lead on several occasions, the last at 21-13, to seal the first set 25-19.
The Hatters (4-21, 1-16) opend a 6-2 lead in the second set, but an ace by Holly Youngquist cut the lead to 6-4. From there, the Hatters built their lead to 18-10. The Eagles trimmed the advantage to 21-17, but the Hatters held on to take the set.
The third set featured six ties and five lead changes before FGCU went on a 4-0 run to take the set. Cheyenne Jenks had a pair of kills while Kokanovic added one.
In the fourth, the Eagles opened a 7-2 lead, but the Hatters tied the score at 9-9. The Eagles took control and rolled to a 25-15 win.
Kokanavich led the Eagles with 15 kills and added 13 digs, while Santos distributed 43 assists to go with 10 kills. Jenks and Audrey Campbell each picked up nine kills apiece.
The Eagles can wrap up a share of the Atlantic Sun championship with a win Friday at Campbell.
