Cape boxers go for titles

Past champions and up-and-coming title hopefuls from the Cape Coral Police Athletic League head to the ring this weekend to compete in the PAL State Championships.

Matches begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Myers Skatium and resume at noon Sunday.

Several of the boxing team members have claimed titles in the past competing in various competitions, including the Sunshine State Games.

Cape Police Officer Mike Anderson serves as head coach and is assisted by Felix Gonzalez and Jon Sanderson.

The event, sanctioned by the Florida Boxing Association (USA Boxing), is open to male and female divisions, ages 8 to 32.

Cape Coral’s Johnny Rolon, 20, who holds seven titles, is among the past champions competing this weekend, at 119 pounds. Other past champions include 13-year-old David Rios (114, 4 titles), 16-year-old Ryan Gonzalez (138, 4 titles), 14-year-old Brian Johnson (132, 3 titles), 16-year-old Reinier Perez (112, 1 title), 17-year-old Edgar Landaverde (119, 1 title) and 12-year-old Alston Williams (80, 1 title).

Brennan Williams, 10, enters the tournament for the first time in the 70-pound class, while Bruno Bredicean, 13, competes at 90 pounds.
