The Fort Myers Green Wave have their sights set on another District 5A-12 football title. They kept those hopes in tact Friday night by pulling out an 18-14 victory in the fourth quarter over North Fort Myers at Moody Field.

David Ayers scored his touchdown on a six-yard run with just under five minutes left, putting the Green Wave (5-4, 3-1 district) ahead.

The Red Knights (4-5, 1-2), who needed a win to keep their own hopes alive, marched inside the Green Wave 35 late in the fourth, but a sack and dropped pass ended their chances.

The Green Wave got on the board first. They drove 80 yards on their opening drive and Ayers scored on a one-yard run, making it 6-0. The extra point was blocked by the Red Knights.

The Red Knights were held scoreless in the first quarter.

Fort Myers put together another scoring drive to go up 12-0. Josh Kendrick had a 42-yard run to get the drive started and he capped it with a one-yard run.

The Red Knights picked up their play after that. A big kick return set them up in good field position. They scored when one quarterback Jose Feliciano fired to starting quarterback Mike Nelson on a play-action fake. The Red Knights trailed 12-7 at halftime.

The biggest play of the game for the Red Knights came in the third quarter when Mike Becker took a pitch and went 42 yards for a touchdown, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and putting the Knights up 14-12.

The game got sloppy toward the end of the third quarter as both teams traded turnovers on three straight possessions.

Tyler Carner had an interception for the Green Wave late in the third quarter, which proved to be a pivotal play.

The Wave used the interception and took the ball down the field with a strong running game and clutch passing.

After the long drive ate up much of the fourth quarter clock, Ayers scored to give the Wave the lead for good.

With the victory, the Green Wave sits at 3-1 in district play. They finish the regular season with nondistrict opponent, Immokalee. North hosts Ida Baker.
