South blanks Baker 28-0
Ida Baker and South Fort Myers are two of the emerging programs in Southwest Florida. Each school opened four years ago and the athletic teams, including football, have continued to make strides.
They battled it out Friday night and the visiting Wolf Pack (5-1) pulled away for a 28-0 victory.
The Wolf Pack struck first on a 10-yard touchdown run by Ed Dorris near the midway point of the first quarter.
Baker (3-4) tried to answer, but had a 53-yard touchdown run nullified because of a holding penalty. It’s been those miscues that have haunted the Bulldogs in recent weeks.
It did once again. Two plays later, Jari McMiller picked off a pass from Baker quarterback Dallas Petrovich and returned it 37 yards, stretching the lead to 14-0.
Sophomore Sean Francis, who had started each of the Bulldogs’ previous six games, suffered a separated shoulder in practice, forcing Petrovich into the lineup.
The Bulldogs fumbled late in the second quarter and the Wolf Pack cashed in. Quarterback Dallas Crawford fired a 22-yard pass to Virginior Loiseau.
The Wolf Pack scored once more before the half. With one minute left, Crawford hooked up with Horace Berklin on a 41-yard strike, bumping the lead to 28-0.
The Bulldogs’ offense struggled, completing only one pass in the first half.
South Fort Myers kicker Mason Prater, the brother of Matt Prater of the Denver Broncos, had a terrific game. He made all four extra points and had powerful kickoffs and punts, which kept the Bulldogs from getting decent field position.
The Wolf Pack defense remained relentless in the second half. Penalties were also a key factor for the Bulldogs.
They fumbled early in the fourth quarter after a promising drive put them inside the Wolf Pack 20.
Baker has a bye next week.
