One of the largest fields in the 20-year history of the Cape Coral City Golf Championship tees off Saturday at Coral Oaks Golf Course in the first of two 18-hole rounds of stroke play to determine champions in five men’s and two women’s divisions.

Nearly 180 players, up significantly from 147 last year, are entered in this year’s tournament, which concludes with the final 18 holes on Sunday.

The course itself is in optimum condition, according to course pro Allen Manguson. It’s primed and ready to challenge the amateur players with established handicaps from 0 to 20 and higher. The first players tee off at 7:45 a.m. on both the first and 10th tees with a second group of players teeing it up just before noon in crossover format.

Two-time overall champion Donnie Hopper returns for another shot at collecting his third title. His bid for three in row last year was derailed by 17-year-old Mariner High School senior Conner Arendell, who toured the course in 136 strokes, a tournament and competitive course records (66-66).

Hopper’s 157 total tied for 12th place. Only one other player, George McNeill, has captured three City Championships. McNeill, now a PGA Tour professional, won his titles in three consecutive years (1995-97).

Arendell is not entered this year, but Dan Bumpus, last year’s runner-up, is back for another chance at his first city title.

Grant Burgess, another Mariner High golfer, also returns for another try after placing fifth (152) last year.

The field also includes several more of the city’s top high school players, including Mariner’s Kyle Schulte and C.J. Cricco, Ida Baker’s Michael Faulkner, Ryan Gallick and Miko Dougherty.
