Prep Report: Cape boys swim past FM

By Staff | Oct 15, 2008

For each swimmer that entered the pool at Cape Coral High Tuesday night, there were plenty of teammates and spectators on the outside yelling and urging them on.

The action and intensity never stopped during the duel between the unbeaten host Seahawks and Fort Myers Green Wave, two of the area’s strongest teams.

“The kids were really excited for this,” Seahawks coach Dianne Kimble said. “They knew it would be a lot of fun.”

Both meets were tight throughout. The Seahawks boys rallied for a 99-84 victory, but Fort Myers came out on top in the girls’ meet 103-83.

The Seahawks trailed in the boys’ standings until the final two events. Cape senior Dylan Walters earned a key victory in the 100 breastroke and the Seahawks took first in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. The relay team consisted of Tyler Thresher, Graham Murza, Nick Keating and Antonio Alvarez.

Thresher picked up a win in the 500 freestyle for the Seahawks and Carlos Alvarez took first in one-meter diving.

“We knew going in that both sides would be close,” Kimble said. “It really went back and forth and came down to the end in the boys.”

The Green Wave girls were led by sisters Amy and Audrey Modglin. Amy, a senior, won the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke events.

The Seahawks got off to a slow start, but Christina Todd provided a lift, cruising to a five-second victory in the 200 individual medley.

The event requires the swimmers to perform four different strokes — butterfly, backstroke, breastroke and freestyle.

“It went really good. I had a good warmup,” Todd said. “I got into the water and really focused on what I had to do.”

The Seahawks picked it up after that. Meghan Cotugno notched a victory in the 100 freestyle, Jeanette Conrad took first in one-meter diving and the foursome of Todd, Cotugno, Lauren Smith and Tara Murza prevailed in the 200 freestyle relay.

Kimble said the meet served as a good measuring stick as the teams approach the LCAC and district meets.

The Seahawks have another meet Thursday at North Fort Myers.
