Ft. Myers crushes Mariner
The Mariner High Tritons took the Midpoint Memorial Bridge into Fort Myers Friday night. The host Green Wave were waiting for them on homecoming night at Sam Sirianni Field, where they handed the Tritons a 38-7 District 5A-12 defeat.
The game started slow for both teams with punts on the first four possessions. The Green Wave (3-3, 1-1 district) woke up and went on the board courtesy of a 43-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nick Catti to tight end John Kohlhauff.
The score remained the same until midway through the second quarter. Josh Kendrick punched in a touchdown from one-yard away, stretching the lead to 14-0.
Penalties on the Tritons (2-3, 0-1) forced a punt and the Green Wave struck again. Jeremy Davis scored on an 85-yard run, putting the Green Wave up 21-0.
They added to the lead late in the first half. Catti completed a 57-yard TD pass that was called back because of a holding penalty.
The Green Wave, though, picked off Mariner quarterback Gabby Rojas with 29 seconds left in the half. They settled for a 25-yard field goal, making it 24-0.
Davis led the Green Wave with 112 yards on 11 carries. He scored on a 52-yard run in the third quarter, giving the Green Wave a 31-0 lead.
Running back Eric Mitchell was the most effective weapon for the Tritons, but they were unable to sustain drives.
The Green Wave scored once more when Tyler Carner threw a touchdown pass to Nic Guffey.
Mariner finally got on the board in the fourth quarter on a 17-yard run by Mitchell.
Mariner travels to Port Charlotte next Friday night while Fort Myers is at unbeaten Dunbar.
