Summerset sail crosses the line
Hurricanes may have postponed the racing, but with “Sail the Tradition” the theme, it will continue. For 43 consecutive years, the sailors of Southwest Florida gathered to celebrate the end of summer by participating in this area’s premier sailing event, the Summerset Regatta.
The event, after being cancelled twice, provided great fun for participating sailors, organizer Steve Romaine said.
“Great wind, best we’ve had in Summerset in years,” he said. “The courses were good, everyone seemed to have just a grand time, the socials were great at Bonita Bill’s.
“This was the second race of the Caloosahatchee Boat of the Year competition, which is something brand new this year.“
The first race (originally scheduled to be the second) was Oct. 4, and the Festival of the Islands CMCS 4, is set for Oct. 25.
“It’s going to be three races off Fort Myers Beach all in one day,” Romaine said.
Dec. 6 is the Commodore’s Cup CMCS & Fort Myers Sailing Club, and “people can sign up until a couple days before the event,” Romaine said.
Those interested should call Dave Naumann at 549-3852, e-mail Racing@ CMCS-Sail.Org or visit CMCS-sail.Org.
“The wind was the big thing at this race,” Romaine said. “This is one of the first times we held it off the beach and everyone had a good social time; we’re going to have the awards dinner Friday night in Cape Coral.“
Romaine thanks everyone who participated.
“They all hung in there with us; it got cancelled twice because of hurricanes. It was maybe a little smaller than past Summersets, but the spirit was there and a lot of people were talking to Jeff Butzer, principal race officer, and thanking him, telling him how they had a great time, lots of fun.”
