Seahawks thumped 40-21
It wasn’t the homecoming game the Cape Coral Seahawks were hoping for Friday night as they lost to the Dunbar Tigers 40-21 at Dave Warkentin Field.
The Tigers’ offense came out firing early, taking their opening possession 55 yards on just four plays for an early 7-0 lead.
Cape responded on its very first series behind a 68-yard pass reception by Prince Holloway.
Dunbar took the lead for good early in the second quarter thanks to a blocked Kenton Beal punt which the Tigers recovered in the end zone.
“They were a better team than us tonight,” said Seahawks coach Mike Goebbel. “They beat us physically, they beat us with speed, they just beat us.”
Trailing 22-14 at the half, and the offense struggling to find its rhythm, Goebbel changed quarterbacks, favoring junior Jaylen Watkins for the second half, but to no avail.
“It was just a change up in offense, to see if we could get it going,” said Goebbel.
The move to Watkins paid early dividends in the third quarter when he orchestrated a 67-yard drive capped by Spencer Boyd’s 10-yard touchdown reception to get Cape within 22-21. That proved to be as close as Seahawks would get.
Boyd was the Seahawks’ only bright spot, collecting 140 total yards on 15 carries and two catches with two touchdowns — one other coming on the ground in the second quarter.
Unfortunately for the Seahawks, their defense proved unable to stop the Tigers, failing on all but one possession of the second half as the Tigers racked up 40 points for the second straight week.
“I told the team we have a district game next week (against Ida Baker), and we can either mope around about (this loss) and not do what we are supposed to do and fade off into mediocrity, or we can get back to it and get back to where we should be,” Goebbel said.
