Bulldogs suffer 1st links loss

One day after extending its unbeaten streak to eight in a row, the Ida Baker boys’ golf team absorbed its first loss of the season.

The Bulldogs lost a close match Tuesday to Estero at Mirror Lakes with shorthanded East Lee County earning no team score.

Estero garnered a 151-stroke total powered by four scores between 37 and 39. Baker netted 168 with four scored of 40-44.

“They are a good team, they deserved the win,” Baker coach Scott Conforte said of the Wildcats.

Ryan Clase and Garret Farmer shared medalist honors with identical rounds of 37 for the Wildcats (2-0).

Todd Mallorey led the Bulldogs with 40 while Michael Faulkner chipped in with 41. Miko Dougherty and Ryan Gallick carded scores of 43 and 44, respectively.

The Bulldogs (9-1) host North Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Island Coast in a makeup match Wednesday at Palmetto Pine Country Club.

At Royal Tee: Riverdale pulled out a six-stroke victory over North Fort Myers, 182-188.

North’s Joey Caizza shot the low round of the match with 41 while Mike Johnson led Riverdale with 43.

The Red Knights (2-2) take a swing at Cape Coral, Island Coast and host Ida Baker Wednesday at Palmetto Pine Country Club.

At The Forest: Three Cape Coral residents contributed to a weather shortened, seven-hole victory for Evangelical Christian.

ECS’ Cape trio of match medalist Matt Hannaford (28), Grant Rosario (36) and Will Loderhose (36) powered a 129-197 win. Jake Sherwin added a 31 and Garret Lee carded 34 for the Sentinels.

ECS (2-1) takes on St. John Neumann Thursday at Naples.

Girls Golf



At Copperhead: Only three players finished nine holes, handing Cape Coral a 10-stroke victory over Lehigh.

Regina Sin’s 43 led the Seahawks with Cathy Wainey adding 57.

Lehigh’s only finisher, Rosa Wengrzym shot 53.

The Seahawks (3-0) face Fort Myers and Estero Thursday at Fort Myers Country Club.



At Pelican Preserve: On the strength of six players scoring their best score of the season, North Fort Myers claimed a four-shot victory over Riverdale with Mariner coming in a distant third.

Co-medalist Emily Yi notched a 40 to lead North to a team total of 215. Co-medalist Rene Kelly led Riverdale’s group with 40.

Madison Fletcher topped the Mariner girls with a round of 62.

North (5-1) plays Cypress Lake Thursday at The Landings.

Volleyball



Barron Collier 3, Mariner 0: Mariner got off to a slow start and despite picking up the pace after the first game lost in a straight set to Barron Collier 25-10, 25-16, 25-16.

Leading the Tritons were Brooke Albert with eight digs and three service aces, and Tara Christie with three aces and six digs.

The Tritons (2-3) visit city rival Ida Baker Thursday night.



Cape Coral 3, East Lee County 1: Tied one game apiece, the Seahawks emerged and finished off the host Jaguars in four — 25-20, 23-25, 25-18, 25-13.

The Seahawks were led by seniors Shelby Rowe and Lindsey Turner.

Rowe had 10 aces and seven kills, while Turner recorded five kills and four aces.

The Seahawks visit Cypress Lake Wednesday.



Update



College dream: Former Ida Baker standout Demetric Page is attending and will play basketball at Yuba College in Marysville, Calif., Baker basketball coach Greg Coleman reported Tuesday.

The 6-foot-3 Page was an inside force for the Bulldogs during his senior season (2007-08). He averaged 12.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, helping the program record an all-time-best 15 wins.

Page is the first player in the school’s four-year history to play college basketball.
