Verot tops Lemon Bay 20-17

By Staff | Sep 13, 2008

ENGLEWOOD — Lemon Bay’s defense did its job, holding standout Bishop Verot running back Schon Thomas to just 24 yards rushing on a rainy Friday night, but poor field position, turnovers and mistakes proved their undoing as the Manta Rays lost to the Vikings 20-17.

Lemon Bay fumbled the ball six times, though it recovered four of them, and threw one interception.

The Rays also committed mistakes on special teams and suffered penalties at crucial times.

After Sean Galvin’s 30-yard field goal gave Lemon Bay a 10-7 lead, the Vikings returned the kickoff out to their 45. A 15-yard penalty for a late hit gave Verot a first down and quarterback Jeff Farrell ran 35 yards for a touchdown and a 14-10 lead it would never surrender.

A 16-yard Lemon Bay punt led to Verot’s final score with 20 seconds left in the first half. That came on a four-yard pass from Farrell to Forrest Campbell.
