Prep Report: Seahawk swimmers win easily

Graham Murza and Meghan Cotugno were double-event winners Thursday night in leading the unbeaten Cape Coral Seahawk swimmers to a tri-meet sweep of visiting Lehigh and Island Coast.

Murza won the 50 freestyle (26.45 seconds) and 100 backstroke (1:0.03) events to pace the boys’ team. Cape garnered 113 points to 50 for Lehigh and 16 for Island Coast.

Cotugno captured the 50 freestyle (27.49) and 100 breaststroke (1:20.85) events to lead the girls to victory. Cape earned 98 points, while Island Coast grabbed second with 19 and Lehigh finished with 15.

Cape swimmers placed first in every event, except for Lehigh’s Brian Bannough who won the boys’ 200 freestyle.

Both Seahawk teams, now 5-0, visit Riverdale next Thursday.

Volleyball



Gulf Coast 3, Ida Baker 0: A long trip to Naples was made even longer on the return for the Ida Baker Bulldogs by a 25-12, 25-12, 25-14 defeat Thursday night at Gulf Coast. Furthermore, the loss is the first for the Bulldogs against District 5A-15 opponents.

Chelsea Shafer pounded seven kills to lead the Bulldogs, who also got eight digs from Chelsea Cline. Deonnah Findley contributed 13 assists to go with six blocks.

The Bulldogs (2-2 overall, 2-1 district) host district rival North Fort Myers Tuesday night.



Barron Collier 3, Cape Coral 0: Barron Collier downed Cape High in straight sets, 25-10, 25-10, 25-17. The Seahawks (1-4) host North Fort Myers Monday night.



North Fort Myers 3, Lehigh 0: North Fort Myers broke into the win column for the first time this season by handing Lehigh a convincing 25-9, 25-13, 25-11 defeat.

Kayla Ramey paced the Red Knights (1-3) with nine service aces to go with seven kills and seven digs. Alyssa Dougherty added five aces and 10 digs.

Suzie McKeever handed out 16 assists and made two kills.

The Red Knights visit Cape Coral Monday night.



Boys Golf



At Royal Tee Golf Club: Cape Coral improved to 2-3 on the season with a 191-202 victory over Cypress Lake, led by low scorer H. Halvorsen with a 44.

Cape’s Tyler Trent carded a 46 to tie for second overall with Cypress Lake’s Blake Dusenberry.

The Seahawks take on Gateway Charter next Tuesday.

At Coral Oaks Golf Course: Six strokes is all the cushion Fort Myers (151) needed to edge Mariner (157) with Island Coast coming in a distant third in a tri-match.

Ben McMahon took medalist honors with a 36 to lead four Green Wave (6-0) players within three strokes.

Braden Junkins topped the Tritons crew with a 37, backed by Grant Burgess with 39.

Jordan Carr had the low round of 46 for Island Coast (0-6).

Mariner (5-2) travels to Sebring Monday to play in the annual Hawkins Tournament.

At Royal Tee Golf Club: Ida Baker kept its season unblemished with a tri-match victory over North Fort Myers and Lehigh.

Todd Mallorey took medalist honors with a 40 to lead the Bulldogs to a team total of 167, a round highlighted by Miko Dougherty’s 5-wood shot from 200 yards for eagle on a par 4. Dougherty finished with 42, the same score as teammate Ryan Gallick.

Greg Crowell and Joe Caizza also carded 42s for North, which scored 182.

Baker (7-0) hosts Palmetto Ridge Monday at Palmetto Pine Country Club.

At Shell Point: Chase Marinell took medalist honors by one stroke, carding a 36, with teammates Dillon Hinkle and Steven Reynolds next with matching 37s to lead Bishop Verot to an easy win over Canterbury.

The Vikings (2-1) travel to Sebring Monday for the Hawkins Tournament.

Girls Golf



At The Landings: Regina Sin handily claimed medalist honors with a round of 33 to lead Cape Coral past Cypress Lake 188-219.

Cathy Wainey carded a 47 for the Seahawks while Tara Higgins and Kim Severo each turned in 54s.

The Seahawks (2-0) take on Gateway Charter Tuesday at Copperhead.



At Copperhead: North Fort Myers improved to 4-1 on the season with a victory over shorthanded Lehigh.

North’s Emily Yi had the day’s low round with 42 while Brittany Agricola turned in 47.

The Red Knights are back in action Tuesday against Riverdale.
