Four area volleyball squads got their first taste of what awaits them when the season begins next week.

North Fort Myers and Cape Coral sprung into action with mixed results Wednes-day night in a best-of-three-sets preseason classic at Cape High.

North opened with a 25-18, 25-8 victory over Gateway Charter. Cape struggled against Estero, dropping a 2504, 25-15 contest.

The classic wraps up Thursday night as teams change opponents. North High once again opens at 6 p.m. against Estero, followed by Cape against Gateway.



CORRECTION: The boys’ high school golf match Tuesday between Ida Baker and Port Charlotte reported in Wednesday’s Daily Breeze incorrectly listed the co-medalists.

Miko Dougherty of Baker shared medalist honors with Brandon Herron of Port Charlotte with a nine-hole total of 41.

Baker (171) picked up its first two wins over Port Charlotte (174) and Hardee County (187).

Baker’s next match is Thursday with Mariner at Coral Oaks Golf Course.
