High schools ready for some football?
Four of the five District 5A-12 high school football teams play in a preseason jamboree Friday night at Ida Baker.
Fort Myers coach Sam Sirianni Jr. said the game serves as a “dress rehearsal” for his players. Just don’t expect the teams to be showing too much, considering they’ll face each other in the regular season.
In the jamboree, which begins at 7:30 p.m., Mariner and North Fort Myers square off in the first half, and Fort Myers and host Baker play the second half.
In other action, Cape Coral visits Cypress Lake for a preseason classic game and Dunbar travels to Bishop Verot.
This is the fourth year that Mariner, North, Fort Myers and Baker have been involved in the same jamboree, rotating each year between the venues.
Given that it’s the end of the cycle, there’s speculation whether the teams will continue this format.
“It depends,” said Baker athletic director Eric Yankovich. “We’ll get together as a county and decide. There is always a profit on it. We’ve shared everything, but some of the athletic directors and coaches like to play a full game.”
Sirianni said he prefers playing a full game and mentioned the disadvantage of playing a district opponent, but also said the district may be broken up after this year.
It’s the final season of a four-year cycle. As enrollments have increased and decreased around the area, schools such as Fort Myers in 5A-12 have been impacted.
“We’re still 5A and we’re under 1,700,” he said. “Not to take anything away from Naples (the defending Class 3A state champion), but our numbers are lower and we’re playing two classes above them.”
For this season, the district is comprised of the same five teams — Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Mariner, Ida Baker and North Fort Myers.
