Fort Myers Miracle pitchers Jeff Manship and Anthony Slama combined to fire a four-hit shutout of the Sarasota Reds Wednesday night, a 2-0 decision on the heels of Tuesday’s 5-0 shutout at Hammond Stadium.
The Reds (24-28) left town with just 10 hits and no runs in the brief two-game series. The win is the third in a row and 20th of the season at home for the Miracle (34-18).
With the best record in the Florida State League, the Miracle extended their lead in the Western Division standings to four games over the Tampa Yankees.
The Miracle’s initial run came in the second inning when Yancarlos Ortiz lofted a sacrifice fly to center after back-to-back one-out singles by Juan Portes and Eli Tintor put runners on the corners.
Ortiz did it all Wednesday night, accounting for 10 assists defensively at shortstop. In the seventh inning, Ortiz reached on a leadoff single to right. He wound up on third base after a sacrifice bunt and a balk.
Edward Ovalle bounced a single over the head of Reds shortstop Todd Frazier to drive in the second Miracle run.
Manship (6-2) scattered three hits over seven innings, walking three and striking out two. Slama struck out three in his two innings of one-hit ball to record his ninth save.
The teams turn it around and play the third game of the series in Sarasota Thursday night.
