JUPITER — In a game full of controversy at second base, when all was said and done, the Jupiter Hammerheads doubled up the Fort Myers Miracle 4-2 Monday night.
The Miracle’s two-game win streak was halted as they only registered six hits.
Jupiter used a pair of two-run innings, beginning in the first. Kevin Randel and Spike McDougall connected for two-out RBI-singles to spot the Hammerheads a 2-0 lead.
The first controversial play at second base went in favor of the Miracle in the top of the third. With runners at the corners and one down, Whit Robbins rolled a ground ball to second that appeared to be an inning-ending double play. James Guerrero fielded and flipped to shortstop Agustin Septimo covering the bag. Septimo’s relay throw to first hit Yangervis Solarte sliding in to break up the double play.
Jupiter argued, to no avail, and Yancarlos Ortiz scored from first slicing the deficit to 2-1.
After one-out singles by Guerrero and Chris Dunn in Jupiter’s fourth, Septiomo’s two-run double to right put Jupiter up 4-1.
In a potentially big inning for the Miracle (28-17) in the seventh, controversy arose again, this time going to the Hammerheads (22-22).
Edward Ovalle tripled and scored on Danny Berg’s RBI-single to center. As Berg Berg later slid into second base trying to break up another double play, Guerrero’s throw clipped off of Septimo’s glove. Base umpire Jason Bertschy immediately ruled Septimo lost the ball on the exchange from glove hand to throwing hand and Berg was out on the play.
Ortiz later grounded out to end the inning.
The third game of the four-game series begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
