Miracle fall to Yankees in 11th, 3-2

Tampa Yankees center fielder Seth Fortenberry took matters into his own hands as the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning to hand the first-place Fort Myers Miracle a 3-2 defeat Friday afternoon at Hammond Stadium.

An Education Day II crowd of 4,343 saw Fortenberry’s one-out triple in the 11th lead Tampa to the game-winning run one wild pitch later.

The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Miracle (26-15), whose lead in the Florida State League’s Western Division standings was trimmed to two games by the second-place Yankees (24-17).

The teams traded runs in the fourth and ninth innings to send the game into extra innings for the second straight day.

Damon Sublett led off the Yankees’ fourth with a walk and moved to third on James Cooper’s ground-rule double to left. A sacrifice-fly to right from Mitch Hilligoss put Tampa ahead 1-0.

A fielding error at second base allowed Rene Tosoni to reach leading off the Miracle fourth. Juan Portes’ RBI-double to left tied the game.

After Fortenberry’s solo HR in the ninth put Tampa up 2-1, another clutch two-out hit by Whit Robbins, an RBI-double to right, tied tha game 2-2.

After his one-out triple in the 11th, Fortenberry scoree on a wild pitch by Miracle reliever Frank Mata.

The finale game of the four-game series is at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Hammond Stadium. Right-hander Jeff Manship (4-1, 4.19) will pitch for the Miracle against Tampa righty Christian Garcia (0-0, 0.00).
