Green Wave crush Tritons 16-1

By Staff | Apr 5, 2008

Baseball is not a one-on-one game. Still, there was some added intrigue Friday night at Fort Myers High for a matchup between Green Wave right-hander Anton Dapcic and Tritons junior Michael Zunino.

Dapcic, a 6-foot-4 senior, was in search of his school’s record for career wins, while Zunino has been on a hitting tear for the Tritons, pounding a single-season record of 10 home runs so far.

“I’ve played so much summer ball with him, he’s a really great friend of mine,” Dapcic said of Zunino. “That’s what makes baseball great, facing good competition.”

For the second time this season, Dapcic defeated the Tritons. After winning 2-0 earlier this season, the Green Wave dominated in all phases Friday night for a lopsided 16-1 win.

In recording his 30th career win, Dapcic got plenty of help. Danny Gundell (3-for-3) launched a two-run home run in the first inning and had six RBI. Brendan Collins had a solo home run and Bryant Tinsley connected on a three-run shot.

The Green Wave (15-2) scored five runs in the first and nine in the fourth, hammering out 14 hits.

The Tritons were unable to slow the Green Wave attack, using senior starter A.J. Reyes and junior Ryan Schneider in relief.

“I have not seen a team in Southwest Florida hit the ball against a quality pitcher like that, this year,” Mariner coach Steve Larsen said. “I think we got flat out outplayed by a team that’s playing better than we are right now.”

The Tritons (14-5) were playing their second game of the day, after beating Bell County, Ky., 8-5 earlier Friday.

Mariner got off to promising start in the first inning. Angel Laborde walked and Zunino singled, but the inning ended when Bryan O’Connor hit a ball sharply up the middle, but Fort Myers second baseman Eric Schropp made a diving stop to get the final out of the inning.

The Green Wave then went to work, offensively. They got six consecutive hits to begin the bottom of the first, including an RBI double by John Kohlhauff and a two-run double by Ethan Drew. Gundell’s home run made it 5-0.

Zunino went 2-for-3 and drove in the lone run for the Tritons in the fifth.
